WORLD WAR TWO FAIRBURN-SYKES O.S.S. STILETTO
A black lightweight steel OSS Stiletto, with its original "pancake flapper" scabbard.
Manufactured by Landers, Frary and Clark, New Britain, 1942-45.
Metal and leather, the metal in army green. Knife unmarked.
Length of knife 11.5 inches (290 mm).
An OSS stiletto in exceptional pristine condition, without much wear to knife and flapper, and even retaining the rubber O ring on the flapper end.
The Landers, Frary and Clark company in New Britain who produced these knives in June of 1942, were the largest housewares company in the USA, and modified their pancake flapper to become the scabbard, the gaps on the face of the flapper neatly adapted itself to different positions on a military belt.
The O.S.S. STILETTO knife is based on the classic F-S dagger design of c.1935, from the British duo, Captains Fairburn-Sykes.
Unfortunately, although it did indeed look sleek and stylish, and was lightweight, but it was also brittle.
It was issued to OSS agents in Europe, and they were
trained in England in the use of the stiletto by one of its designers, Lt. Col. William Fairburn
