Description
Offered . .......an antique
French 950 sterling silver teapot spout tea strainer .
The piece is marked with the Minerve1 First Fineness mark denoting 950/1000 sterling silver, the
A (wheel) R
maker's mark for Andre Roberge of Paris 1910-1924, and with a Bigorne mark at the top of the bucket handle, which is a mark used in France to differentiate genuine from fake hallmarks.
The "tweezer" part of the handle is inserted into the spout of the teapot and is held in place as it expands. When the hot water containing loose tea leaves is poured, the bucket catches and filters the leaves out so the tea can enter the cup without large tea leaves. The filter is in a small attractive decorative pattern at the bottom of the bucket. The inside of the bucket is lightly gilded to prevent the acidic tea from damaging the silver. The bucket is about 2 inches in diameter at the top, tapering to 1 1/4 inches at the bottom and is 1 1/4 inches tall. The handle adds another 1 3/4 inches. The "tweezer" spout insert is about 2 1/8 inches long. The strainer weighs about 27.4 grams. The tea strainer has a few dings from 100 years of use, but no real damage.
